Volunteering

Volunteering at Manly Yacht Club (MYC) is a fantastic way to get involved in the sailing community, meet new people, and learn new skills while supporting the club’s smooth operation. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or a beginner, we have a range of roles where you can contribute and become an integral part of MYC’s events. Check out the exciting opportunities below!

1. Race Committee Roles

Our racing events rely heavily on dedicated volunteers who help ensure everything runs smoothly on the water. If you’re interested in getting hands-on with the action, here are the roles you can explore:

  • Race Officer: The Race Officer is responsible for managing the race on the day, including starting the race, setting the course, and ensuring that everything runs according to plan. It’s a crucial role that provides leadership and excitement.
  • Race Assistant: As a Race Assistant, you’ll be supporting the Race Officer with tasks like timing, recording race results, and monitoring the course to make sure everything is in order.
  • Support Boat Driver: Love being on the water? Support boat drivers are essential for safety and logistics during races. You’ll assist with setting and retrieving race marks, transporting race officials, and being on hand for any incidents.
  • Mark Layer: A critical part of the racing team, the Mark Layer sets the course markers and ensures they are in the correct position for the race. You’ll be out on the water, ensuring the racecourse is ready for competition.

2. Club Committees

Being part of a committee is a great way to get more involved, share your expertise, and contribute to the vibrant community we all enjoy. Whether you have a passion for planning, organising, or hands-on work, there’s a role for everyone. Here are some key committees where you can make a difference:

  • Membership Committee: Help shape the club’s future by developing strategies to attract new members and retain current ones. This committee is vital to ensuring that MYC remains a welcoming and engaging place for all. You’ll be involved in enhancing membership benefits, fostering connections among members, and creating an inclusive community where everyone feels they belong.
  • Club Committee: If you enjoy rolling up your sleeves and tackling DIY projects, this is the committee for you! The Club Committee takes responsibility for the maintenance of MYC’s boats, equipment, and facilities. From fixing up the clubhouse to ensuring the boats are in top condition, this is the perfect role for hands-on members who want to ensure MYC operates smoothly and looks its best.
  • Junior Sailing & Youth Development Committee: Are you passionate about inspiring the next generation of sailors? This committee focuses on developing programs and opportunities for young sailors to get involved, improve their skills, and foster a lifelong love for sailing. Whether it’s organizing junior events, overseeing training programs, or encouraging participation in club activities, your contribution will help shape the future of sailing at MYC.

Why Volunteer with MYC? Volunteering at MYC not only enhances your sailing experience but also contributes to the community in a meaningful way. You’ll develop new skills, make lifelong friends, and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that you’re helping to keep the spirit of sailing alive at Manly Yacht Club.
