Junior Training
Manly Yacht Club is the home of the famous Manly Junior Dinghy (the MJ) and the club provides a great opportunity for junior members to get involved in sailing via participation in the MJ program. We sail most Saturday mornings from 9:00am in the summer and, subject to demand, weather etc, from 9.30 am on Sundays in the winter.
The main focus of this program is kids learning to sail in a relaxed and friendly environment where parents and the older MJ sailors can pass on their knowledge informally to newer members at their own pace and level. The program involves training days, social events, club races and opportunities to take part in events with other clubs around the state.
MYC does not offer a formal “Learn to Sail” course although, over time, the keen MJ sailors can progress rapidly in skill and knowledge and have a lot of fun in the process.
It is a strict requirement of MYC that junior members can only participate if they are accompanied by an adult prepared to take full responsibility for both their safety and conduct. A knowledge of sailing on the part of the accompanying adult is useful but it is not essential. However adults are expected to help. There are lots of tasks to be done on sailing days that anybody can learn to do on day one. Courses are run to obtain power boat licences etc.
Typical ages of MJ sailors are around 9 to 15 although both older and younger ones can also join in provided they are competent swimmers. The usual starting point is to crew for an experienced skipper until skill, knowledge and confidence build up.
The historic clubhouse on East Esplanade provides a friendly, family atmosphere in a great position, and allows everyone to join in at their own pace.
If you don't have your own boat why not adopt-a-boat?
